Leadership & Management

A Day Without LeAdeR

Have you ever imagined a plane without pilot, :)
In life we face many situations when there is no one to guide us or direct us.
In such situation we are guided by ourselves and we need to direct our self, we need to empower, we need to motivate our self, we need to keep eye on deadlines and simultaneously (most importantly) we are meant to do the actual work as well, here the real complication comes when you have to manage yourself as a lead as well as a performer, your team, your time and in addition responsible for the work you are supposed to do.

I would like to put one incident of my life in lime light through these blog words. This incident changed my thought process and the approach towards work.

Well any one can do the work asked to him/ her but, what important is, the articulation in this competitive era. I concluded this thought when I came across a situation of being leader for few days with only one developer and the name of developer was Mayank Chourey ;)
YES, I do remember those days when I actually realized the value of a good leader.

The day was seeming very common to me. I took my breakfast, and drove to office. A news was waiting for me that my lead is unfit to join the office for 3 days.  [:-O] My eyes and mouth were opened for few seconds like I am stunned.. not because of unfitness of my lead but because we were in rush to deliver an urgent requirement with short deadline :(.
I started taking it as an opportunity as if new learning for me. One day passed and I was done with few tasks. I was happy as I was leading myself but actual work was still left.. the same day I was expected to report to manager for the development task. I had a conversation with him. During that conversation few questions were bombarded on me which made me feel like I am in IAS exam with zero preparation. boom!! Same day and 2 blasts.
He asked me to do the task and I replied "yes! I will do it, but within how much time you are expecting this task to be done" and then the question was "You tell me Mayank, in what time you can give it to me as soon as possible". Till now my lead handled all these with manager and comes to me with sorted tasks and timeline too. But this time I have to prepare timeline, sort the task and plan the delivery.
Woooo!
I came back and called to my lead, interrogated about his health and by heart I was willing and wishing that he could get well soon. He was not. Not sure my good luck or bad luck. Again I geared up myself considering it as a good luck of getting opportunity to learn many things in a short duration and started planning for the task completion.
This time I was responsible for development, answerable for any issue if comes across like delay in delivery, bug in code, actual requirement fulfillment, meeting expectations of client, commitments etc. These all were scrambling in my mind and I picked one by one to shoot. I lived those 4 days as lead, developer and a coordinator between these two as well. I did planning, worked by all means, verified everything and long discussions too at the end.
But after a hot and sizzling meal I got success in sweet dish. successfully achieved the task according to my commitment.

Hushhh!!!!  Fewwwwwwww!!!!!!

I felt more confident and got a very important learning, that is "Always try to be broad and open in thoughts but precise in communication".
